Social media is about about engaging customers and adding value to their experience. If you think only in terms of ROI, you’re missing the bigger picture. It’s amazing how many people I talk to who say that social media isn’t a valuable avenue for their outreach efforts. A common misperception is that only established brands that sell to young consumers find value in facebook, twitter, youtube, google+, pinterest, etc. This is wrong on so many levels.
Isn’t social media just for kids?
Smart businesses go where their customers are. Everyone’s customers are on social media these days, no matter what their age (more here). Social media integration isn’t about selling. It’s about engaging the community and adding value to their shared experience. If you think only in terms of ROI, then you’re doing it wrong. Third, social media marketing has more to do with listening than speaking. Facebook and twitter are not just two more places to post your latest press release. They are places you go to hear what pleases, motivates, and annoys your customers. It’s not always pleasant to discover what they’re saying, but it’s a gold mine of information.
